AnyWord
Balkan, Eric
$35
#27479/1238
is a general text indexing and retrieval program similar to ZyIndex and Memory
Mate. Anyword creates an index of a text file much like the index of a book.
Then the next time you want to quickly locate information, Anyword uses the
index to do so. Programs limits are about 1 million characters of text spread
over up to 254 files. Anyword will search on either a word or a combination of
words. It allows Boolean operators in the search (AND - OR - NOT). It allows
wild cards in the target word(s). Anyword is not a quick and dirty word-search
utility. If you just want to search a bunch of files for some specific text,
you can use something like FGREP. Anyword is a powerful, multi-featured text
retrieval system.
Concord and Indexer
$?
#27479/0760
are used to generate an index for a document. CONCORD will tabulate up to 1500
words, from 3 to 20 characters each, and will list the number of times each
word appears in the text. The resultant word list is alphabetized and output
to a file. INDEXER reads the word list, and compares every word on the list to
the lines of your manuscript. It contains provisions for multiple occurrences
of any of the words on a single page, or it will, at your option, ignore all
occurrences except the first on each page. This may be very useful in
preparing the text itself, because the writer can see where and how often a
certain word or term is used.
The INDEXER program will accept up to a maximum of 1000 words (which seems a
little odd since CONCORD will generate a 1500-word list) and will record up to
12 page numbers on which those words occur. The user should of course select
only the important words of a text, which usually occur far less times than
the maximum count.
PC-Index
Help Software
$48
#27479/1838
will produce an index for a text file. PCI is fast, menu-driven and easy to
use. PCI will produce an index on every word in a document, or you can control
which words will be included or discarded. It can handle any size file.
Features include the ability to use a wildcard character for searches; support
for several word processors such as WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, Multimate,
Wordstar, and Wordstar 2000; increased size of word lists; up to four columns
in the index; an option to extract only capitalized words; no-case conversion;
and an option to turn indexing on and off within a document. Requires 384k DOS
RAM.
dtSearch 2.01
DT Software, Inc. ASP
$104
#27479/3254 [2 disks]

created with WordPerfect and Multimate Advantage II. It can perform boolean,
proximity, phrase, and field/segment searches, and will search macros. Other
features include date searches; filename searches; network support;
applications menu and launch feature; index verify and rebuild; word list
generation; and a DOS shell. Requires 384K, a hard disk, and DOS 3.2+.
Find-X
Forrester, John
$20
#27478/1587
finds all the items in a cataloged collection that match the description that
you want to look for. The items in the collection may be anything at all, but
the Find-X Universal Cataloging System is particularly useful for items whose
characteristics you cannot identify by casual inspection, such as photographic
slides, photographs or documents in files, record collections (particularly
records with several selections), items kept in different places, research
notes, books, etc.
IdeaList
Sleeter, Michael R. ASP
$39
#27478/2794

its very attractive graphical interface (EGA required). It also includes an
interesting set of inspirational quotes. Other features include a file manager
module and comprehensive help screens.
Information Please
TexaSoft ASP
$53
#27478/2618
is a free-form database program that allows you to store and retrieve
information of any type. You can look up entries by number or by any
combination of words or phrases. An interesting feature is the ability
to integrate graphics. For example, the sample database about state
parks lets you read multiple screens of information, and prompts you to
press a function key to bring up a graphic illustration. As a side note,
users should find the included database about problems in DOS to be very
helpful. Requires 320k.

Memo Master 3.11
Kacmarcik, John G. Jr.
$30
#27651/3432
is a free-form data manager. It is basically designed to let you type in
whatever you want and then search for it when you need it by text or by dates.
A "reminder date" field will cause the program to automatically draw your
attention to an entry on a specified date. Multiple databases are allowed.
Trilogy
Ball, B. J.
$0
#27651/1264
is basically a database program for paragraphs of information. However, Mr.
Ball says the program was initially developed as an aid to authors who, during
the preliminary stages of writing a book, may accumulate several hundred
individual notes dealing with particular aspects of the general subject to be
written about. This program enables you to quickly and easily call up all
related notes when needed. Trilogy is menu-driven, easy to use, and comes with
thorough on-disk documentation as well as the BASIC source code.
UNo - Useful Notes
Useful Software
$20
#27651/3727
lets you keep notes similar to the scraps of paper spread around your desk. But
with UNo, cleaning up your desk and finding that note you know is there
somewhere is a lot easier.
UNo lets you search on a description. It also lets link notes to other notes, to
files, to DOS commands, or to programs to be run. UNo can be run from the
command line or as a 50-70k TSR. Notes can be copied, moved, sized, ordered, and
locked. Features include file importing, cut and paste, word wrap, smart
indention and other word processing features.
(Test Notes: The docs say that note size is limited only by available memory,
but we could not import a single 100k file without getting an out-of-memory
message. The docs also say that UNo supports 43/50-line displays, but it does
not, which we confirmed with the author. These comments are meant to clarify,
not to detract from, an excellent program.)
KeyPunch System
Charpentier, Peter ASP
$85
#20172/4410
facilitates the keyboard entering of large amounts of data into the computer.
You define the data structure. Numerous features are included to verify data and
to make entering data easier and more efficient. Resulting data files may be
restructured into formats for importing into or processing by other programs.
Typical uses of this program is to keypunch to disk survey results, mailing
lists, membership rolls, etc.
PunchJr
Pros & Cons, Inc.
$25-$50
#20172/2419
is a general purpose data entry program. Some programs in the PsL, such as data
plotting, statistics, label printing and others, will work on data files that
you are supposed to have created with another program. Normally, any word
processor or text editor can be used, but PunchJr has been optimized for such
tasks. It features automatic save, context-sensitive help, redefinable keyboard,
easy menu operation, operator statistics, automatic range checking, automatic
jumps, a variety of output formats, and the ability to resequence data for
output.

SSQL 3.1b
Silvaware
$38
#1510
is a standard method to query (extract data from) a relational database and do
other operations to maintain relational databases. SSQL provides the most
flexible approach to extracting data from a database. It has dBase compatible
files, and up to 500 characters are allowed for row widths. A report and forms
generator are also provided. Because of the complexity of writing an SQL
program, commercial versions, while somewhat more powerful than this one, are
also very much more expensive. At the least, SSQL is a good learning and
training tool for SQL.
Ticker
Management Systems Group
$15
#4794
displays short text items selected from a database. A sampler database
of jokes is provided, but you can create your own databases with any
